How do you operate a 4-point lock?
Step 1: Lift the door lever/handle; this will engage locking rods at the top and bottom of the door into the door frame.
Step 2: lock the door with your key; this will engage a throw bolt and secure the latch and rods.
How is a 4-point lock different from a standard lock?
4-point locks, also known as multipoint locks, offer enhanced security with an improved weather seal over a standard door lock; instead of your entry lock only locking in the middle of the door, as it would with a traditional deadbolt, the door locks in four separate places to ensure maximum security. The extra locking points provide a tighter seal by making it secure at the door’s top, middle and bottom.
What types of doors can have 4-point locks?
In Australia, 4-point locks can be used with most front doors, French doors, laundry doors, and generally any external hinge door.
Can a 4-point lock be installed on existing doors?
Firstly, up to 50% of homes built in the past decade with exterior hinge doors are likely to have a 4-point lock - lift the lever to check.
In general, installing 4-point locks on existing doors is not recommended. When a 4-point lock is installed on the door in the factory, the door frame is also fitted with the necessary components to complete the system. It’s not impossible to install it onto an existing door, but there will likely be damage to the door frame opening, and parts of the mechanism may not be flush.
