ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions makes one of the world’s only regenerative swing power door operators – the Lockwood 5831 Series.
This low energy, swing door operator is a simplified solution for high traffic doors that occasionally require automatic operation.
Launched in 2021 to widespread praise, it offers big advantages.
“When you think about door operators, front of mind is this complicated, hard to install, heavy maintenance product. They have their place, but there are many instances where you can use a simplified product with all the same benefits,” explains Malila Gabuardi Lopez, Product Manager – Mechanical Core.
For starters, it’s easy to install. It’s surface mounted on to the door frame, so you don’t need to do any wiring and you don’t need to have a dedicated power supply.
“Because it’s compact, you don’t need a lot of space for it either, unlike the big door operators. It fits in the tightest of spaces and it can be retrofitted on existing doors – making it a convenient solution for older buildings that need to be made DDA-compliant without major renovations.”
“It’s simple, it’s durable and you don’t need continual adjustments and maintenance,” explains Malila.
We’ve removed all the headaches. With high energy door operators you need sensors, power and specialist installation. Not with this product. Where a low energy operator is appropriate, a facility’s maintenance team can install it within a few hours.
A regenerative drive system charges an onboard battery pack, eliminating the need for electrical power. It creates its own power through manual operation. No wires necessary.
“There is nothing else on the market like it,” says Malila. “It will self-generate all the power it needs to keep its onboard battery pack charged.”
There are lots of other impressive features and functions too, including dynamic breaking, adjustable hold open, latch assist, obstruction detection, power close, and a built-in on/off switch.
The patented auto-tune feature sets door speed and force parameters to ensure safety and compliance.
In accordance with the DDA, low energy door operators can provide greater accessibility for openings used by mobility-challenged individuals, avoiding them having to push or pull open the door in front of their path of travel.
“When you need power, you’ve got it. Doors equipped with the 5831 Series can be opened by an actuation device like a push button or wall switch. And it’s safe – it knows when to break if there is something obstructing it and it doesn’t use so much force that it will put someone in danger while opening,” says Malila.
For optimal hygiene control, the 5831 Series offers a simple solution for upgrading to hands-free. Wave-to-open switches paired with the door operator allow people to easily move through a space without having contact with frequently touched surfaces.
“The highly sensitive programming ensures it triggers operation only when intended,’ explains Malila.
